Thank you for reading the second edition of The Writer! We hope you enjoyed reading it as much as we did editing it. As writers know, sequels can be challenging! Just how much should you change from the original?
This is the most hotly debated question here in the Editorial room—and we debate a lot. But this question seems to extend beyond writing a Part 2—As we move on in life and live our own sequels, how much should we change? It can be equally worrisome to change frequently, or to never change at all. Change can mean climbing high, but it can also mean falling down. And it can be easy to stay on the ground if you fear you might fall.
We founded this journal to help erase that fear. We give detailed feedback to all rejected submissions and encourage them to submit again. Since we always have rolling submissions, writers are continuously able to resubmit their work. It’s easy to see the “perfect” story and believe it was born that way. But what we don’t see are all the drafts, eraser marks, and red ink that went into making it that way. So don’t be afraid of writing that sequel, or doing something a little different from how you’ve done it before. Maybe you’ll fall. But what’s more exciting is—what if you don’t?
Don’t be spooked,
